Four Reasons Painting The Exterior Of Your Home Can Fail

If you are planning on painting the exterior of your home, you will want to be sure that you get the job done right. There are plenty of mistakes that you can easily make, without realizing, that can ruin the original paint job and force you to have to repaint in the future. Exterior painting for your home can be expensive, so it's best to get the job done right the first time around. Here are four reasons painting the exterior of your home can fail:

  1. The Wood is Wet: If you are painting wood on the exterior of your home and it is wet, the paint is not going to hold and there will be multiple patches left once the paint has dried. It's important to wait a few sunny days before you paint the wood. This should give it enough time to dry. Be sure to check the wood with your hand. If you feel any dampness, continue to wait. The best time to test the dryness of wood and to paint wood would be in 70 to 85 degree weather.
  2. The Wood is Too Hot: When you are painting the exterior of your home, you should not be painting in 90 degree weather or above. This is because the wood is going to be too hot and while the paint is drying, it's going to leave blisters. You are going to have to repaint these areas once they are dry. If blisters do happen to form, be sure that you wait for the paint to dry then scrape away the blisters, smooth the area with sandpaper, and repaint in cooler weather.
  3. It's too Humid: If the weather is too humid, then the water in the paint won't evaporate properly and the paint will dry slowly and appear to be melting. You should also not paint if the interior of your home is humid. This is because moisture will be trying to leave your home, which is going to make the exterior walls of your home have too much humidity. To make your home less humid, turn on the exhaust fan in the bathroom and lowering the dehumidifier if you have one.
  4. The Walls are Dirty: If the walls are too dirty, the paint is not going to go on smoothly. This is going to leave many patches in the paint. Consider power washing your home completely before going through with a new paint job for the exterior of your home.

By knowing some reasons paint for the exterior of your home can fail, you can be sure that you better understand what conditions allow for the best possible outcome. This is going to save you a great deal of time and money.
